While nothing beats the convenience of a backyard picnic, a change of scenery never hurts. Sometimes you need to get out. Expand your horizons and explore the world – or at the very least your own city.
Yesterday we shared how to pack the perfect summer picnic. So today, we figured we’d share where to take it. Here are five of the best picnic spots in Milwaukee – and all just a short car ride away:
Veteran’s Park
1010 N Lincoln Memorial Dr., Milwaukee
There’s are plenty of open green space to stage your picnic. When you’re done eating, why not fly a kite from Gift of Wings, rent a paddle boat or simply take a walk and enjoy the gorgeous Milwaukee lakefront?
Hart Park
7300 Chestnut St., Wauwatosa
In addition to several picnic areas, you’ll find nature trails, playgrounds, tennis courts and a skate park. Don’t feel like packing a picnic spread? Takeaway eats can be found at several nearby establishments including Saz’s State House, Leff’s Lucky Town and The Village Cheese Shop.
Grant Park Beach
100 E. Hawthorne Ave., South Milwaukee
At the south end of Grant Park, you’ll find the sanded beach area – a bit of a hidden gem. Work up an appetite with a dip in the lake. BYO picnic eats or get takeout from Ferch’s Beachside Grill – conveniently located right at on beach.
Whitnall Park
5879 S. 92 St., Hales Corners
Whitnall Park touches three communities: Franklin, Greendale and Hales Corners. And there are several picnic sites scattered throughout the park to pick from. If you have kiddos along, you might want to set up at the large playground area. It’s also near the Wehr Nature Center and Oak Leaf Trail for a little post-lunch hiking!
Lake Park
3233 E. Kenwood Blvd., Milwaukee
There are so many pretty spots to stage your picnic – near the playground and tennis courts, at the foot of the lighthouse or at the top of the steps that go down to the lakefront. When you’re done eating, take a little time to explore the waterfall and ravine trails that wind through the park.
