7 Ways to Instantly Improve Your Mood

“The blues are because you’re getting fat, and maybe it’s been raining too long. You’re just sad, that’s all. The mean reds are horrible. Suddenly you’re afraid, and you don’t know what you’re afraid of. Do you ever get that feeling?” – Truman Capote, Breakfast at Tiffany’s

Although it can’t be sunshine and rainbows all the time, there’s no reason to get stuck with the blues or the mean reds. Here are seven tactics that will instantly turn a bad mood around:

1. Listen to music

It’s nearly impossible to feel down in the dumps when your favorite songs are playing. Sing along, dance along and let the music carry you along to a better mood.

2. Get out of the house for a bit

A change of scenery can work wonders toward improving your mood. Take a walk around your neighborhood or run a few errands for an instant lift.

3. Call a loved one

Simply talking things through with a loved one is often enough to feel better by the time you hang up.

4. Declutter your space

Sometimes you have to literally take out the trash to feel better. Having too many things stashed around your home can end up weighing you down. ‘Kondo’ your home and toss or recycle the things that no longer spark joy or donate them to a local charity shop.

5. Share a laugh

There’s just something about laughing that instantly makes you feel happier. Looking for a good chuckle? Check out Mike’s Hard Lemonade’s #LaughsOverLemonade series!

6. Bake something delicious

It’s hard to stay sad when the smell of chocolate chip cookies is wafting through the air. Sweet treats not your thing? Bake a loaf of bread instead!

7. Take a nap

Getting more shut eye every night is a great way to improve your mood over the long term. But for an instant lift, try taking a short nap. Just 30 minutes to an hour can make all the difference in how you feel for the rest of the day.
