Getting ready for a day at the park, beach or pool? Don’t forget to pack enough fluids to stay properly hydrated in the heat.

Summer is just beginning but Milwaukee has already seen several days in the 80s and 90s. Under cooler weather conditions, eight, 8-ounce glasses of water is enough for most people. But once it gets warmer, you’ll likely need to increase that a bit. More sweat = more lost fluids that you’ll need to replace.

A general rule of thumb is to drink half of your body weight in ounces of water on hotter days. If drinking a bunch of plain H2O isn’t too appealing, try infusing your water with in-season fruit and herbs. You can use whatever you have on hand, but here are a few combinations to get you started:

  • Strawberries + Mint
  • Watermelon + Basil
  • Raspberries + Lemon + Mint
  • Blackberries + Sage
  • Orange + Lemon + Lime
  • Blueberry + Orange + Mint
  • Cucumber + Lime + Thyme

Of course, sipping an ice-cold glass of lemonade is also an excellent way to stay hydrated on even the hottest days of summer!
