The Junior League of Milwaukee (JLM) is awarding a total of $10,000 through its annual grants program. The COA Youth & Family Centers and Walker’s Point Youth & Family Center will each receive a $5,000 grant. Each organization will be eligible for additional volunteer support from the JLM.

COA Youth & Family Centers will use the funds to support its Read Everywhere program, which provides free books to Milwaukee children and holds literacy events for families in under-resourced neighborhoods. COA plans to expand their availability of books for young children, including Spanish-language titles. The organization will also expand the program’s online catalog to further facilitate the distribution of books.

Walker’s Point Youth & Family Center will use the funds for its Teen Crisis & Runaway Program Counseling Project, which offers 24-hour services and emergency housing for 11-17-year-olds in times of crisis. Licensed as a group home, the shelter is the only such facility in Wisconsin to offer housing to parenting teens with their children. The counseling program offers services to youth staying in the shelter and those in crises, but, not in need of housing.

“The Junior League of Milwaukee is pleased to support these incredible organizations whose projects will meaningfully impact teens and children in Milwaukee. We’re so proud not only to make these donations, but also to do it through a process that educates our members,” said Junior League of Milwaukee President, Laura Hyland. “Through our grants process, our members learn more about issues facing Greater Milwaukee area residents and the many great projects local organizations are developing to meet community needs.”

The Junior League of Milwaukee awards grants each year as part of its mission to promote the education, health and nutrition of women and children in the greater Milwaukee area. Information on the 2020-21 grants program, including the request for proposals, will be available in the fall on the community page of the JLM website.
